Approach to Learning in EYFS

An effective curriculum for young children takes account of how they learn and the abilities, knowledge and understanding they bring to the school with them. The ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ Framework (EYFS) specifies the attitudes, skills, knowledge and understanding children should achieve by the time they leave Reception.

 The EYFS is divided into three prime and four specific areas of learning:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development;

Communication and Language;

Physical Development;

Literacy;

Mathematics;

Understanding of the World;

Expressive Arts and Design.

We recognise that our children learn in a variety of ways. We aim to provide a well planned and appropriately resourced Early Years Curriculum to take forward the learning of all our children, giving each individual the opportunity to succeed in an atmosphere where everyone feels secure and valued.

Our Early Years team have thoughtfully planned the environment to ensure that all areas of learning are supported. There are designated areas for all areas of learning, which provide a range of resources that children can independently access, enabling each child to follow their own interests and initiate their own play. Our staff aim to develop their learning through supporting and extending opportunities in their play.

The layout of our Early Years phase enables children in our Reception class to have a free flow environment between indoor and outdoor areas and share the provision and play together at various times during the day. Through adult guided activities in small groups and with the whole class, as well as child initiated play; our staff at David Livingstone plan to develop individual children’s needs. Our activities fulfil certain learning objectives and develop particular skills.

Assessment

Our children in Reception are involved in baseline assessment once they have settled into their class. Observations of each child help our staff to assess their level of progress against the age related EYFS Development Matters for all areas of learning. This assessment also helps teachers to identify each child’s needs and specific areas for development. Each child has a `Profile Folder’ to store all samples of work, observations, photos and assessments. This is then used to enable our staff to monitor progress and assess each child for the Foundation Stage Profile.

Parents are welcome to look through their child’s profile and discuss progress that is happening both at home and school with the class teacher. At the end of Foundation Stage, the Reception teacher will have completed a foundation stage profile for each child, identifying progress in all areas of learning. This is shared with our parents through an end of year report, and the profile is passed on to the Year one teacher to inform them of each child’s progress and support further learning in these areas.

Our Curriculum booklets are as a result of our Parent/Carer questionnaires, taken in July 2014 and are updated yearly. Our parents and carers wanted more information about how to help their children at home and what they are learning throughout the year.
