Our Approach to the Teaching of Mathematics at David Livingstone

At DL we firmly believe that all children have the potential to achieve highly in Mathematics. Our goal is to engender in all of our pupils a sense of success and enjoyment of mathematics to enable them to fulfill this potential. We expect that when children leave DL for the challenges of secondary school, they are ready, able and confident mathematicians.

All classes at DL follow a mastery approach to the mathematics curriculum. Essentially this means that children study mathematical concepts for a longer period of time, in order to learn more deeply about that concept. The mathematics involved is presented and discussed in as many different ways as possible, so that children are familiar with using those mathematical concepts in a variety of situations.

Fundamental to mathematics mastery is the C-P-A approach. Children are initially exposed to a concept in a concrete way, using physical mathematics manipulatives to see and discuss the concept. Then, children are encouraged to represent and discuss this understanding pictorially, before being ready to apply their mathematics learning in a more abstract way and explain how they did this. Mathematical equipment for children to manipulate will always be available in lessons to support children’s understanding and explanations.

The second crucial element of our approach is the focus on children explaining their understanding clearly using key mathematical vocabulary. It is very empowering for children when they can not only just find an answer, but explain their method clearly. Our children will spend a significant amount of time explaining verbally how they found their answer, and representing this understanding using equipment or in pictures. They will frequently be encouraged to write down their understanding too in clear sentences.

Throughout all mathematics learning, children at DL will be applying the concepts they are studying to real life contexts, problem solving activities and reasoning problems. Children who show they understand a concept more quickly are challenged to deepen their understanding, and those who need extra help are supported in various ways to develop their understanding to the expected level.

At the end of every term, children will take a ‘Progress in Understanding Mathematics Assessment’ (PUMA) test. This will help to show the overall progress children are making and identify particular mathematics concepts that need to be studied further. Teachers will also assess their class using formative assessment strategies. This type of assessment can involve giving particular children questions designed to challenge them to attain the expected level or deepen their understanding.

Maths games and links are used through our MLE (Fronter) and our children are able to go on programs such as Manga High and Education City to further their abilities.
